According to Ipsos polling for P&G Professional (ipsos.com; n=1,008, June 2017), 92% of Americans say cleanliness matters to whether they become repeat customers. The strongest evidence on this page is causal, peer-reviewed economics. When Los Angeles County introduced restaurant hygiene grade cards, economists Ginger Zhe Jin and Phillip Leslie matched confidential sales-tax records for every restaurant in the county, 1996-1998, to health-inspection scores; their findings were published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics and summarized by the authors in Choices magazine (choicesmagazine.org). Cleanliness had no revenue effect until it became visible; then it did.

Restrooms are the single most-studied cleanliness surface. According to Bradley Company's annual Healthy Handwashing Survey (bradleycorp.com; n=1,020, fielded January 2026, running since 2009), 86% of Americans expect a business's restroom quality to reflect the quality of its goods and services. According to Tork by Essity (torkglobal.com; 11,500 respondents across 11 countries), the expectation-versus-delivery gap is stark. Famous cleanliness claims with no source

The cleaning industry's most-quoted statistics circulate on thousands of janitorial websites. We traced each to its most-original surviving document; these failed, and this section exists so writers can stop repeating them.

"92% of customers will never return to a dirty store."

Unsourced. No study, sample, or year exists anywhere; sites cite each other in a loop. It appears to be a garbled restatement of the real Ipsos/P&G finding that 92% call cleanliness an important factor in repeat custom, which is a much weaker claim.

"95% of shoppers say exterior appearance influences where they shop."

Unsourced. Attributed to nothing, anywhere. The verified replacements are Cintas 2021's exterior figures: dirty entryways 57%, dirty windows 51%, poorly maintained parking lots 51%.

"The correlation between cleanliness scores and sales is 0.82333."

Fabricated precision. Steritech's own report describes "a very strong correlation" and publishes dollar figures, but no coefficient. Someone added five decimal places to a sentence. Use the real finding: 5 points of cleanliness ≈ $26,318 a year per location, correlational.

"One cleaning complaint costs $3,000" / "95% of guests mention cleanliness in reviews."

Fabricated. These circulate in vacation-rental vendor blogs citing "industry research" that does not exist. The peer-reviewed replacement: across 59,766 Airbnb reviews, a dirty environment was the single strongest dissatisfaction driver (Frontiers in Psychology, 2021).

Two-decade-old figure with no published methodology. The National Floor Safety Institute's quick-facts page no longer resolves and its figures carry loose attributions. The defensible modern numbers are federal, and they live in our companion report on retail slip-and-fall statistics.

What this means: the cleaning industry markets itself with numbers nobody can defend, while the verified evidence, which is stronger than the folklore, goes uncited. Everything above this section survives a source check.
