A slow drain that gets snaked twice a year is a reason to run a camera before paying for the third snaking, and each rung skipped upward is a cost the owner did not budget. For a property manager, the same logic applies to turnover documentation: the cheap check is the one that catches the expensive failure early.

Per-foot pricing is the number contractors quote and homeowners search. According to Angi's 2026 guide, running a new sewer pipe costs $50 to $250 per linear foot, averaging $150 with materials and labor. HomeGuide's 2026 guides put traditional dig-and-replace at $50 to $180 per linear foot, trenchless pipe bursting at $60 to $200, and cured-in-place pipe lining at $90 to $250. What this means: the $280 versus $995 split is real and worth knowing before you call. The guides do not explain the gap, and neither states what its average includes. Ask whether the quote covers access work (pulling a toilet, locating the line) or just the camera run. Either way, the video is the record. A dated inspection file is what turns a "the pipe was fine when we bought it" argument into evidence at sale, at move-out, or in a claim.
Backups, cleanup and insurance
Sewer failures are common enough that the federal government counts them. According to the US EPA's sanitary sewer overflow program (epa.gov), there are at least 23,000 to 75,000 sanitary sewer overflows a year in the US, not counting backups into buildings. The EPA's 2022 Clean Watersheds Needs Survey report to Congress logs $26.6 billion in reported needs just to eliminate those overflows, 81 percent of it collection-system work such as eliminating basement backups, and $151.1 billion for conveyance system repair and new lines. ASCE's 2025 Infrastructure Report Card (infrastructurereportcard.org) shows collection system failures rising from 2 to 3.3 per 100 miles of pipe over a decade; its 2017 edition counted 800,000 miles of public sewers and 500,000 miles of private laterals. When the backup reaches a building, HomeGuide's 2026 sewer backup guide prices cleanup and disinfection at $7 to $15 or more per square foot. The pipe's material sets the clock. According to the City of San Luis Obispo's sewer lateral guidance (slocity.org), clay pipes typically last 50 to 60 years and cast iron averages 30 to 50 years. InterNACHI's life expectancy chart (nachi.org) puts below-ground cast-iron waste pipe at 50 to 60 years, ABS and PVC waste pipe at 50 to 80 years, and concrete at 100-plus. The APWA Minnesota Chapter's history of Orangeburg pipe (apwa-mn.org) records that the pipe was advertised to last 50 years and that its maker closed in 1974. HomeGuide's 2026 guide summarizes the whole range as 30 to 100 years. The cities are blunt about what this means for an older house: Santa Barbara (santabarbaraca.gov) says a home built before 1970 most likely has a clay, cast iron or Orangeburg lateral, and Tacoma (tacomapermits.org) tells owners to investigate any side sewer over 25 years old or not made of PVC. Reading the table: a home built in 1965 with its original lateral is 61 years in. That is past the published life of Orangeburg and cast iron and at the far end of clay's. Santa Barbara's rule of thumb, pre-1970 means clay, cast iron or Orangeburg, and Tacoma's 25-year-or-not-PVC trigger both point at the same thing: scope it before it backs up.
Claims we could not verify
Three numbers appear in almost every sewer backup article. We could not trace any of them to a primary document, so they are listed here as attributed claims rather than as statistics.

Usually attributed to the Insurance Information Institute. Its sewer backup article says backups can cause "thousands of dollars in damage" and gives no average. The nearest verified figures are the $5,000 sublimit many insurers apply and the 2019 IRMI estimate of $20,000 to $50,000 for an uninsured incident (Statistic 34).
