How many dryer fires there are, and why the counts disagree

The most repeated number on the internet is that the US has 2,900 dryer fires a year. That figure is real, but it is old. It comes from a US Fire Administration topical report (usfa.fema.gov) published in 2012 that analyzed 2008 to 2010 data on clothes dryer fires in residential buildings. According to NFPA's research analysis (nfpa.org), local fire departments responded to an estimated 13,820 home structure fires a year in 2014 to 2018 in which a dryer was involved in ignition, and NFPA's earlier 2017 report put washer and dryer fires combined at 15,970 a year for 2010 to 2014, 92 percent of them dryers. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's residential fire loss report (cpsc.gov) estimates 5,300 clothes dryer fires a year for 2019 to 2021, a count that excludes confined fires and intentionally set fires. The three agencies are measuring the same problem with different filters, which is why the count ladder below shows all of them with their year windows.

Where dryer fires happen and how far they spread

According to the US Fire Administration (usfa.fema.gov), 77 percent of residential dryer fires occurred in one- and two-family homes, 17 percent in multifamily dwellings, and 3 percent in hotels and motels in 2008 to 2010, and 83 percent started in a laundry area. What this means: one in five dryer fires happens in a building someone else's family also lives or sleeps in. In multifamily and hotel laundries the exhaust runs are often longer and shared, and the person loading the dryer is not the person who pays for the building, which is exactly the setup where a documented cleaning schedule matters. The spread data makes the case for the smoke alarm as much as the vent brush: a fire caught in the dryer costs $1,790, and the same fire that spreads through the building costs 27 times that.

Cleaning frequency and installation code

The International Mechanical Code (iccsafe.org) sets the physical limits that decide whether a dryer vent can be kept clean at all. Under Section 504.9.4.1 of the 2021 IMC, a domestic dryer exhaust duct may run no more than 35 feet from the transition duct connection to the outlet terminal, and every fitting eats into that allowance: a 4-inch mitered 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet. The duct must be smooth metal at least 0.016 inch thick and 4 inches in diameter, the flexible transition duct behind the dryer is capped at 8 feet. The termination must have a backdraft damper and no screen, and any run over 35 equivalent feet has to be labeled within 6 feet of the dryer. These limits are for domestic dryers; commercial laundry dryers are covered separately in Section 504 and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. On frequency, CPSC's safety alert (cpsc.gov) tells owners to clean the lint screen before or after each load, clean the vent and exhaust duct periodically, and replace plastic or foil accordion ducting with rigid or semi-rigid metal. EPA does not recommend it except on an as-needed basis, meaning visible mold, vermin, or ducts clogged with debris. Current guides price it below EPA's range: HomeAdvisor (homeadvisor.com) reports an average of $389 with most homes paying $271 to $509, Fixr (fixr.com) reports a $500 average for a 2,000-square-foot home, and Thumbtack (thumbtack.com) reports most people pay around $374. The stronger case for touching ductwork is energy, not air: according to ENERGY STAR (energystar.gov), about 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through a typical home's duct system is lost to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. Two dryer fire numbers are routinely repeated in a form that misreads their sources. First, "16,000 dryer fires a year, 10 deaths, $239.7 million." Consumer Reports correctly attributes these figures to CPSC for "between 2019 and 2021", and they are a three-year total: CPSC's tables give 5,800 plus 5,100 plus 5,100 fires, which is 16,000, and $85.9 million plus $80.8 million plus $73.0 million, which is $239.7 million, with the only reportable death count (10) falling in 2020. The annual figure is 5,300 fires and $79.9 million. Writers who drop the date range and present 16,000 as a yearly number triple the real rate. Second, "34 percent of dryer fires are caused by failure to clean, according to NFPA." The 34 percent figure is USFA's, from its 2012 report on 2008 to 2010 data. NFPA's own figure is 32 percent (2014 to 2018). The difference is small, but the attribution to NFPA is common and wrong. We also looked for a primary source behind the common claim that a clogged vent adds a specific dollar amount to a dryer's energy bill and found only cost-guide estimates that cite each other; no utility, DOE, or laboratory figure surfaced, so no energy-savings number appears on this page.

What this means: the safe citation for a current annual count is CPSC's 5,300 (2019 to 2021) or NFPA's 13,820 (2014 to 2018), each with its year window attached. The safe citation for the failure-to-clean share is 32 percent (NFPA) or 34 percent (USFA), attributed to the right agency.

How long can a dryer vent be by code?

35 feet, measured from the transition duct connection to the outlet terminal, under Section 504.9.4.1 of the 2021 International Mechanical Code. Each 4-inch mitered 90-degree elbow subtracts 5 feet of allowed length and each 45-degree elbow 2 feet 6 inches. Longer runs are allowed only per the dryer manufacturer's instructions or with a listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilator, and any run over 35 equivalent feet must be labeled within 6 feet of the dryer connection.
