Can You Use Smart Glasses for Construction Site Inspections?

Builders are already doing this

This is not a future idea. Kitchell (kitchell.com), a US general contractor, has written about its safety team using Meta glasses to document job site conditions hands free, capturing observations while walking and talking with crews instead of stopping to take photos. Their safety manager's framing is the right one: the camera is for keeping people safe, not for catching people.

The wider evidence says hands-free capture pays off in industrial work. In Upskill's published Boeing case study, covered by Forbes (forbes.com), glasses-guided wiring assembly cut production time 25% with error rates near zero. And the hardware is now everywhere: according to Counterpoint Research (counterpointresearch.com), smart glasses shipments grew 139% year over year in late 2025. The two problems a job site adds

Problem one: the PPE gate

OSHA's construction eye protection rule, 29 CFR 1926.102, requires protective eyewear that meets the ANSI Z87.1 standard. Meta's consumer glasses are not sold as ANSI-rated safety eyewear. So on any site or task where eye protection is required, camera glasses do not replace safety glasses. Ask your safety officer before anyone wears camera glasses in a work area.

Enterprise devices solve this differently: they skip the eyewear question entirely. The RealWear Navigator 520 ($3,150) attaches to a hard hat and works alongside safety glasses and goggles, with a 50 MP camera, four noise-canceling microphones rated for loud environments, voice control, and hot-swappable batteries, per RealWear (realwear.com).

Problem two: the length of the walk

A site walk is long, and consumer glasses record short clips. According to Meta's capture guide (meta.com), clips cap at 3 minutes on most models and 5 minutes on the Oakley Meta Vanguard. Battery drains fast under heavy capture too: DC Rainmaker (dcrainmaker.com) measured roughly 90 minutes on a Vanguard with continuous 3K auto-capture running, harsher than the 3 to 4 hours Wareable measured under heavy normal use. So do not plan to film a 45-minute walk wall to wall on consumer glasses. Plan short observation clips.

A workflow that holds up

• Film one clip per observation. One clip per area, floor, or issue. The 3-to-5-minute cap stops being a problem when each clip is one thing.
• Say the location out loud. Start each clip with where you are: "Level 5 slab, northeast corner." The audio track becomes the index for the footage.
• Tell the crew. 11 US states require every party's consent to record a private conversation, per a 50-state chart from law firm Matthiesen, Wickert & Lehrer (mwl-law.com). Meta glasses show a white light while recording. Announce the camera and explain what it is for, the way Kitchell does: it is there to keep people safe.
• Get the clips somewhere reviewable. Footage syncs through the phone app and uploads like any other video. From there, review can be human, AI, or both. RapidEye analyzes site and property walkthrough video from any camera, comparing condition over time and flagging what changed.
