Buy the Media, Don't Build It

PriceLabs
Visit PriceLabs

In August 2022, PriceLabs acquired Rental Scale-Up, one of the most respected independent news sites in the short-term rental industry. Founded by Thibault Masson (ex-Booking.com) in 2013, Rental Scale-Up had spent nearly a decade building editorial credibility, a loyal newsletter audience, a YouTube channel, and monthly online conferences.

Instead of spending years trying to build an audience from scratch, PriceLabs bought one that already trusted the content it consumed. Masson became PriceLabs' first Head of Product Marketing, and the site continues to operate as "RSU by PriceLabs" with editorial independence intact.

The play works because the credibility transfers. Rental Scale-Up's audience already sees it as an objective source. PriceLabs gets brand association with that trust without turning the publication into a sales brochure.

Break Every Rule in B2B Branding

Hostaway
Visit Hostaway

When Hostaway announced its $365M funding round, the visual featured CEO Marcus Rader as a crowned skeleton wielding a guitar, alongside a skull-faced unicorn, explosions, and cars loaded with cash. Their earlier $175M announcement showed Rader traversing a desert dragging large black bags.

In an industry where every competitor uses polished corporate stock photos, Hostaway's imagery is impossible to scroll past. The branding extends to events: while Guesty hosts "GuestyVal" (corporate conference), Hostaway runs "Hostchella." The name, riffing on Coachella, reinforces the countercultural identity. The 2024 debut was in Miami; the 2026 edition expanded to London.

"Resonates with younger, ambitious property managers who see a company willing to take risks much like they do." Hostaway reached a $1B valuation in October 2025, becoming the first STR PMS unicorn.

Give Away Just Enough to Become Indispensable

AirDNA
Visit AirDNA

AirDNA's Rentalizer lets anyone enter any address and see projected STR revenue, average daily rate, and occupancy for free (50 searches per month). The tool provides just enough data to validate interest. Serious investors who need detailed comparables hit the paywall and upgrade.

On top of the free tool, AirDNA publishes an annual "Best Places to Invest" report (covered by Yahoo Finance, Morningstar, and Short Term Rentalz), a monthly Market Review, and the "STR Data Lab" podcast (152+ episodes). Together these create a compounding flywheel:

1
Free tool captures search traffic
2
Annual report earns press + backlinks
3
More users = better data = more authority

Build a School, Not a Blog

Lodgify
Visit Lodgify

In September 2021, Lodgify launched Lodgify Academy: free, self-paced video courses with downloadable checklists, quizzes, and certificates. They chose LearnWorlds as the platform, giving it the feel of a real learning management system rather than a rebranded blog.

The insight was that their target customer (independent hosts thinking about scaling) didn't want another blog post. They wanted structured education that felt like a curriculum. By packaging expertise as courses instead of articles, Lodgify signaled a different level of commitment to helping hosts succeed.

Create the Category, Own the Category

NoiseAware (now Rest)
Visit NoiseAware

NoiseAware didn't compete in "smart home devices" or "property security." They created "privacy-safe noise monitoring for vacation rentals" and owned it. 68% of complaints about short-term rentals are noise-related (per Rent Responsibly), making noise the single biggest operational pain point for operators and their neighbors.

Category creation
Defined "privacy-safe noise monitoring" as a category. No audio recording, no legal liability. Just decibel-level detection.
October 2020
Vrbo partnership: up to 50% discounts for owners, 60 days free for PMs. Legitimized noise monitoring as standard practice during peak COVID party concerns.
2M+ room nights
Expanded into hotel smoking detection. Monitored over 2 million room nights.
Rebrand to Rest
Dropped the product-specific name. "Rest" can encompass noise, smoke, occupancy, and any future detection capability.
